Recently my Insignia developed a squealing noise coming from the engine bay. The noise was coming from the camshaft seal and PCV valve located in the engine rocker cover. Due to the faulty PCV valve, the car was building up a lot of vacuum in the engine, sucking air through the camshaft seal. From reading on the web, this is a known GM fault that will happen over time in the 1.6 SIDI A16XHT engine. In the USA, GM had a service bulletin regarding this issue on the Buick Cascada, which uses the same 1.6 SIDI engine as some Astra and Insignia here in Europe. In the USA, GM replaced the rocker cover free of charge. However, folks in Europe have to pay for the replacement.

He hides behind a VPN. The Troll GTPprix should know I can still identify his location even if he uses a VPN to browse this website. This website has a tab at the bottom of the page which displays the new members. The Troll, Chris White GTPprix, copies the member's usernames, then searches the name in Google and in his website's past contacts records; if he finds an adjoining email for that username, he sends a stupid threatening email to that member pretending to be a GM employee. Chris White, aka Wams GTPprix, has been collecting a lot of folks VINs and information from his website, then using the VINs and information that he collects on his website to threaten folks who are members of CameraLoops.com. On his website's contact page, you have to input your VIN, email address, and name in order to send him a message. I bet anyone who received a threatening email from someone claiming to be a GM employee has at some point sent their name, address, email address and VIN to Chris White aka Wams GTPprix. If you receive such emails, do let us know, and kindly ignore such emails as they are sent by a TROLL named Chris White, aka Wams GTPprix from Detroit, USA. That idiot has nothing better to do with his life as he can no longer charge people $500 to change VIN in an HMI module.

For some time now, I've been trying to figure out the PIN CODE change option using DPS with no success. I had some free time today, so I had another go at the PIN CODE puzzle. I solved the puzzle after drinking two cans of RedBull and thinking a bit. Changing the PIN CODE in GM vehicle modules is now possible using the DPS tool. This option is excellent for folks who want to recycle used secondhand GM vehicle electronic modules.

Without a PIN code change in a used IPC, BCM, EBCM, and SDM, you won’t be able to program those modules via GM online SPS service utilising the vehicle’s original PIN.

Important
To change the PIN code in a used GM module, you must know the PIN code already programmed/stored in that module. Without knowing that PIN code, you cannot change the PIN code in the modules using DPS.

Methods for knowing the PIN CODE stored in a used module.
Connect the used module to DPS, then use the "get Controller Info" option to know the VIN stored in the module.
You can then use this VIN to PIN service to know the PIN CODE stored in the used module.

The USB charge port on the Rode video mic pro plus is prone to breaking off the circuit board due to insufficient soldering. This is a major manufacturers fault that has happened to many people, including myself. A simple fix is to take the mic apart then re-solder the USB part back onto the circuit board. The mic housing is held on by three plastic clips, which can be pried off using a flat head screwdriver or a pry tool. Check the below photo for the clips location. Resoldering is doable for an amateur. However, the USB port part is tiny, and you will need a clamp to clamp the USB part onto the circuit board before soldering. Check the photo below for the quick fix.
My soldering is not as polished as I wanted it, but hey' it now works.

GM Development programming system, aka DPS, is an in-house software that General Motors technicians use to develop software for GM vehicle electronic modules. DPS functions similarly to the GM SPS client. By itself, DPS can only perform the basic function of reading the ECU VIN and basic information. To program a module using DPS, you must acquire the corresponding calibration files and custom DPS scripts to complete any DPS programming. Only limited information, and no complete documentation, is available to the public on using DPS. All the information posted on this website about DPS was developed over time through a routine trial-and-error process. Note: You must have a GM-compatible OBD diagnostic interface for connecting DPS to your vehicle, such as the VXdiag NANO GM, DrewTech Mongoose Pro-GM2, or GM MDI-2 interface. Any diagnostic interface compatible with GM GDS2 will work with DPS. You need access to the GM SPS service to gather calibration files for your GM vehicle's electronic modules.

Using DPS
Reading a module's VIN
In this example, you will read the ECM's VIN.
Select the "Vehicle Architecture". In this case, select "Global-A".
Note: Only GM Global-A vehicles can be programmed using the cracked version of DPS. Unlike GM Global-A vehicles, GM Global-B vehicles need a DPS version that can connect to GM servers to retrieve the Global-B 12-byte seed key for the modules. I do not offer any solutions for GM Global-B vehicles.

All the modules in the GM vehicle have an ECU ID address and are primarily connected to one of two CAN bus diagnostic pins: pin 1 (low-speed CAN bus) or pins 6 and 14 (high-speed CAN bus). You must first assign the correct diagnostic pin for the module you need to read or program. Select PIN 1 (33.3KBd) or PIN 6 & 14 (500KBd).

Set the correct diagnostic pin in the DPS settings. The ECM is on diagnostic pin 6 & 14 (high-speed CAN bus).

Click "Get Controller Info".

Input the module's ECU ID address; in this case, input "11", which is the ECU ID for the ECM. Click "Read Info" to read the module's VIN and other information.

Recycle used GM modules
Instead of purchasing a new module from GM when you need a replacement, you can purchase a used module from websites like eBay, etc, which is cheaper. Change the VIN and PIN, program the vehicle's correct calibrations into the used module, and make it fully functional for the intended vehicle.
Note: You can only recycle a module from a vehicle of the same year and model as the one you're repairing. For example, if the vehicle you're repairing is a 2018 GM Silverado, you must source the use module from a 2018 GM Silverado. Modules taken from a 2013 GM Silverado will not function in a 2018 GM Silverado.

By itself, DPS cannot change the VIN or the PIN in a used module. To change the VIN or PIN, you will need special DPS files that can perform this task. Many DPS VIN and PIN change files are located in the download section of this website.
In the download section, you can select various modules to find the correct files for your model vehicle. If you do not see the vehicle model that you need files for, contact @Troy, he will be able to create the correct DPS files for you.

All modules in a GM vehicle assigned to the security system store a PIN. When the GM vehicle electronic system boots, the GM vehicle theft security system scans all the modules and checks the PIN. If more than three modules have an incorrect PIN, the vehicle won’t start.
To recycle any of these modules, you must change the VIN and PIN to match the vehicle you're repairing.

Global Diagnostic System 2 aka GDS2.
GDS2 is GM's motor vehicle diagnostic software used by auto mechanics to perform diagnostics, including reading fault codes, resetting the vehicle's electronic module and various other configurations.
In order to have access to GDS2, you have to pay a subscription fee to GM.
In this tutorial, I demonstrate how to pay once and have GDS2 access for eternity.
GDS2 uses two security measures.
1. A hardware ID file name "swkV3"
2. A system licence file.
This tutorial circumvents the system licence file. That's why one needs to purchase a GM subscription in order to obtain the hardware ID file.

Step 1
Purchase a GDS2 subscription for the shortest/cheapest length.

For USA cars, use ACDelco
For European use ServiceBox

Step 2
Install and run GDS2 on all the PCs on which you intend to use the GDS diagnostic software.

Step 3
Windows OS automatically hides the "programData" folder. To unhide hidden folders, use the Windows Explorer settings.
Navigate to C:\ProgramData\GM\TIS2WebProxy\.dls\.lreg
From that folder, delete the licence file that's there and replace it with the attached infiniteLease.dat file.
The infiniteLease.dat file also works with the new Techline GDS2.

Step 4
Restart the GDS2 application. The Days remaining until the lease expires should change to infinite.

For Techline, connect GDS2 standalone mode.
Windows OS automatically hides the "programData" folder. To unhide hidden folders, use the Windows Explorer settings.
Go to C:\ProgramData\GM\TLC\TIS2WebProxy\.dls\.lreg
Delete the file that's already in the ".lreg" folder.
Place the infiniteLease.dat file you downloaded into the ".lreg" folder.
Close and reopen the Techline Connect application. The days remaining until the lease expires should change to infinite.

Officially when you purchase the HMI navigation map update from GM, GM dispatches the map update on a USB stick drive, which is locked to the VIN number submitted when purchasing the map update.
This added navigation map update security makes it impossible to use that navigation map update USB stick to update the HMI module in cars other than the one you purchased the map update for.

In order to overcome the map update security issue and to be able to use the map update USB sticks on other cars, one has to perform a few tricks.
As mention, the HMI module map update USB stick is locked to the car's VIN number it was purchased for.

The trick
Step 1
Temporary change the VIN number in the car's BCM module to the VIN number of the map update USB stick.

Step 2
Temporary change the VIN number in the car's HMI and radio module to the VIN number of the map update USB stick.

Step3
Extract the map update file onto a reputable USB stick drive.

Step 4
Place the navigation map update USB stick into the car's USB port and let the car update the navigation map.

Step 5
After the car updates the navigation map, do steps 1 and step 2 again, change the BCM, HMI, and radio module VIN numbers back to your car's original VIN number.

You no longer need to manually correct the checksum of the GM calibration files. You can automatically correct the checksum of modified GM calibration files online using this checksum tool, which was created by a CameraLoops member.

In this tutorial, I will explain in steps how to correct the checksum after editing a GM module calibration file.
This process illustrates correcting the checksum for the first four bytes.

It's beneficial to read up on these other tutorials to familiarise yourself with GM's calibration files concept if you're new.

Tools you will need.

Hex Editor Neo

Step 1.
Open the calibration file in Neo and edit your file.
Set Predefined Layouts as Expert User Layout.

Step 2.
Select all the codes in the calibration file except the first four bytes/code.

Step 3.
At the bottom of Neo click Checksum.

Step 4.
In Neo's checksum window, change the option: Whole document to Selection only.

Step 5.
Select Sum of Big-Endian 16-bit value

Step 6.
Click the Refresh button.

Step 7.
Copy the last 4 digits, which is: 9730

Step 8.
Convert 9730 into Binary code, then copy paste the binary code in a text editor.

Step 9.
Now you need to create a reverse copy of the binary code: 1001011100110000, see the example below.

Step 10.
Convert the reverse binary code 0110100011001111 into hexadecimal code, which equals to 68cf

Step 11.
Now you need to add 1 to the hexadecimal code, which looks like this 68cf+1=
Use this online calculator to do the calculation.
68cf+1=68d0

Step 12.
Now you have 68d0
Replace the first four unselected bytes/code in the calibration file with 68d0.

Step 13.
The checksum has been corrected.
Save the calibration file and program your calibration package to the module using GM DPS.

It's beneficial to read up on this other tutorial to familiarise yourself with GM's calibration files concept if you're new.

I will demonstrate how to trick GM's online SPS into giving you the needed calibration files when the module is already updated to the latest calibration version, or has a different part number version for the car/VIN it was originally coded for.
Before you approach this method, you need to already have a set of calibration files for the editing process, maybe from a different car's Vin number, which is using the same specs module.
This method works best with GM's European marketed cars. With the marketed European cars, only one file needs to be edited to carry out the trick. More than likely, all the files in the calibration package will need to be edited with the American marketed cars( I could be wrong on this).

This trick can be useful for various reasons.
Examples are:
Say you install a used IPC into your car and update that IPC to the latest calibration version, later you change your mind and you need to revert the IPC back to stock, you can use this trick to get the original files for your IPC if you don't already have them. Say you bought a used BCM module that came out of a Insignia/Buick Regal car and you want to install that used BCM module into a Mokka/Buick Encore, you can use this trick to get the needed calibration files from GM's online SPS service for the Mokka/Buick Encore car. You can use this trick to mix and match calibration files for experiments, activating features. There could be many other reasons why you would need to get calibration files.
You can use this trick as a mind sparker for sparking ideas and possibilities to overcome some hurdles for gaining what you need to achieve your goals.

A good tip
Label and keep an archive of all the calibration files and other files when you come across them.
They may come in handy down the line. Nothing last forever, GM may choose to alter their system and stop handing out files to their cache folder.🙂
Only use calibration files coded for that line of module.
Meaning: do not try to install files coded for an HMI module onto a BCM module.

In most cases, the method consists of two stages.
Editing the calibration file. Correcting the checksum after editing the file.
I'll explain a bit about the checksum in simple terms for those who don't know what it is.
The checksum is a security method GM uses for a calibration file to identify if the file has been edited/hacked before the core system gives it access to run on its system's platform.
Imagine the binary codes in each calibration file are marbles.
Some of the marbles are very important, while some are not.
GM places all the marbles in the middle of a circle to form a circle with a nice round circular edge line, and they then take a photo snapshot of the circle and various measurements as a reference.
When we edit the calibration file/marbles, we end up altering that nice rounded circular line. Remember GM took a photo snapshot of the file, and they know the precise measurements for how the circle should look before they give that file access to operated in the system.
Correcting the checksum is basically rearranging some of the other unimportant marbles to form back that perfect circle, which then tricks the modules core system into believing the file was not edited/hacked.
Other mathematical calculations are going on, but the concept is basically the same.
I won't include a tutorial on how to correct the checksum, as I need to figure out a simple none confusing method to demonstrate the process.
However, you can do a google search on correcting first-4 byte Big-Endian checksums to understand the process.

With that said, let's get down to explaining the trick.
Other than the checksum part, the trick is pretty simple.

Input the modules VIN number into the website
TIS
TIS2WEB.SERVICE.GM.COM
Copy the System Calibration part number.

Use an online converter to convert the part number decimal value into hexadecimal value.

Open the System Calibration file in a hex editor.
Use the hex editor to search for the hexadecimal part number.

You now need to change the part number's last digit to one digit down.
Example: The System Calibration part number is 23402917. You need to change it to 23402916.
Convert 23402916 into hexadecimal and use it to replace the original part number that's in the calibration file.
You may or may not need to correct the checksum.
Save the file.
Program the calibration package to the module using DPS.
When you connect the module to GM online SPS service,
GM's SPS will now see your module as not having the latest calibrations and gives the needed files.
In some cases, you can get away by only changing the System Calibration part number with no need to correct the checksum.
So, do that and if it doesn't work, then correct the checksum.

In order to activate remote start on GM vehicles you need:
1. Find VIN car("new VIN"), which have remote start options (PRO code BTV).
2. Update firmware for BCM from SPS with "new VIN".
3. Change VIN in BCM from "new VIN" to your original VIN in order to odometer shows correct data. For this you need cheap CH341A EEPROM tool like this.

It would probably be best to first make a backup of the chip in case anything goes wrong. Then you can view the contents of the chip. In the software, the left side of the screen shows the actual program, which is displayed in Hexadecimal numbers. The right side shows a translation in plain text.

On the right side, look for a string of numbers that look like a VIN. It is usually only a few lines down from the top. It is always missing the first number of the VIN. Replace it with your VIN (minus the first number) by simply highlighting each letter on the right side and typing in your VIN. Then program back the chip and you’re done.

How to manually change the EPROM PIN code and VIN in an 8-inch Insignia instrument cluster.
This tutorial shows how to change the VIN and security PIN stored in the IPC EPROM chip.

Tools you will need:
Soldering iron and solder.
A hot air rework station or solder wick for removing the EPROM chip.
A chip programming device. I use the GQ-4X Willem Programmer
A hex editor. I use Synalyze Pro for Apple Mac.

The process is very straightforward:
Take apart the IPC and remove the circuit board.
Remove the 8-pin SOIC EPROM chip.
Place the EPROM chip in the chip programmer.
Read the chip and save the chip's .bin file.
Open the .bin file in a hex editor.
Find the location of the VIN and four-digit PIN code.
Change the VIN and PIN code to the ones from your car.
Save the edited .bin file.
Use the chip programmer to write the edited .bin file onto the EPROM chip.
Solder the EPROM chip back to the circuit board.

After doing this, the car's mileage will display correctly on the IPC unit.
You will now be able to program the IPC unit via GM online SPS using your car's original four-digit PIN code.
You will receive an IPC DTC error from GDS2, which states "Incorrect Immobilizer Identifier Received"
To eliminate this DTC error, you will need to use GM's online SPS immobilizer learn to delete your car's keys and relearn your car's keys.
There's a much faster method for changing the VIN and PIN in the instrument cluster using GM DPS software.
However, if you want to change the four-digit PIN code and VIN the cheap way, you will need to remove the EPROM chip to do it.
This process can also be used to change the VIN and PIN in the BCM module and the four-inch IPC EPROM chip.

Here, you will find information and files for upgrading your HMI v2 to the HMI v2.5 or replacing your HMI module with a used part.
Upgrading from HMI v2.0 to HMI v2.5 will enable Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, better SAT-NAV maps, video playback, and faster touch reaction from your touch screen.
Most of GM's electronic module car parts are security-locked to a specific car via the car's VIN number.
To install used car parts and have them functioning, you must first program your vehicle's VIN into the module.
When upgrading from the HMI v2.0 to the HMI v2.5, you must also upgrade the radio module. You can bypass the radio module upgrade by updating the firmware to v2.5 specs. (if you update the radio module firmware, you do not need to replace it)

The radio module upgrade firmware can be found below.

To get Apple Carplay to work, you will also need to replace your vehicle's double USB port with a single USB port.

The items you will need for removing the theft lock from the HMI module:
A copy of GM DPS software, preferably V4.44.
My custom DPS HMI vin change file
A compatible GM diagnostic interface example: VXDIAG Nano, Drew tech mongoose GM2 pro, etc. (All diagnostic interfaces that work with GM's SPS will work with GM's DPS software.

This is for European cars/cars that use the SilverBox Radio module.

This is not really a review as they're already tons of reviews all over the web about the Thinkware U1000 DashCam.
In this article I display my mods for discreetly installing the U1000 in my car and modifying two Thinkware iVolt mini battery for longer parking mode recording without using the car's battery.
It's a shame Thinkware didn't design the iVolt mini battery with a USB port and a port for extending the battery like some of the other brands.
The U1000 live view feature via the in car always on wifi.
Yep' alert notification to my mobile phone when the dashcam senses even a slight movement or thump, plus I can login to view the live footage for both front and rear cameras from anywhere in the world. It fully works and is a great feature from Thinkware dash cam.

The HyperJuice MBP 1.5-222 MacBook power bank battery is OK, though the USB-C Magic Box V2 is rubbish and a waste of money.
It stopped working and was replaced under warranty twice in the same year.
Whatever electronic parts are used or circuit design is not good.
A simple fix is to use a 100W car cigarette port USB C charger to make an adaptor for my MacBook.

After some research, I found a car USB-C charger that outputs 87W when charging a 16-inch MacBook Pro.

I bought a Weber Performer in 2016 to upgrade to a much bigger BBQ with a more modern look. I was hoping to buy one that would last forever. I also purchased the Weber cover for the BBQ.
