Converting firmware from bin to zip format for GM DPS

Featured Replies

  • Contributor

Hello everyone! I'm curious: can anyone on the forum convert the firmware from a .bin file to a .zip file so I can use it in the GM DPS program? Can anyone tell me how to do this? There's a paid course, and I might consider purchasing it. Maybe Mr. Troy will release such a course. Due to limited equipment, I can only work through the GM DPS program for now, and this seems more reliable to me, so if something goes wrong, you can easily return everything to stock.

P.S. Sorry for any mistakes, I use an online translator.

Thank you! I've put a LOT of time in hahaha. You are correct, you need a hex editor to do it. I could technically throw an app together but I haven't needed it a ton of times. I'll show an example, yo

DPS has limited writing abilities using the utility file and calibration files, which are written to specific locations in the memory chip. Firmware dump BIN files are a full image of the memory chip. To convert a full-image bin file to a DPS calibration file, you will need a converter app that can locate and extract the calibration files from the bin image, then convert them to the DPS calibration format. That's way beyond my knowledge and understanding and would require GM concept documentation to achieve.

I just found someone who says they can do the conversion, so I'm wondering if it's even possible. Once I've raised the necessary funds, I'll order the conversion from them and see if it works.

Yes, I believe it's possible, especially for those with good knowledge of tuning ECMs, WinOLS, Hptuner, etc.

I am very interested to know more about this, especially with some challenges I face such as remapped ECU when want to add more features to it.

I've written a full BCM reading application and I've taken EFI-Live calibrations and manually converted them to DPS. It's possible for sure, it can hurt your eyes doing it manually lol.

That looks like a neat utility to have. Any chance of sharing it?

Excellent app, you're a true expert on GM programming. I think the calibrations can be extracted using a hex editor, but I don't know how to do it correctly yet. Need to know the correct addresses, and after extraction, you'll likely need to edit the checksum.

Thank you! I've put a LOT of time in hahaha. You are correct, you need a hex editor to do it. I could technically throw an app together but I haven't needed it a ton of times. I'll show an example, you can see the BCM Read file which is a full BCM dump, then a calibration (might not have pasted in the right order but you can see the filename). This is an easy one as everything lines up. After the operating system, there's a lot of blank space of course and in the OS, they likely say what size and where they want to read each calibration from. When it comes to DPS, it's all up to the utility. They're putting the addresses in that they know they have their module reading each calibration from. So in some cases, you may have to modify or build a new utility file with different addresses. Also, in this case, the checksum is actually in the BCM flash as well. It's used internally too to ensure no corruption happens after even when the module is programmed, so it'll come out with the read.

As promised, I'm writing about the conversion. I saved up some money and ordered a .bin file to zip conversion. The person provided me with a ready-made zip file, but it turned out I already had one. I compared them and realized the person was a fraud. He couldn't convert my .bin file to zip.
