Enable LKA and/or ACC for Openpilot Gen2 16-18

Featured Replies

  • Contributor

2016-2018 only

Each year has specific calibration files.

*To convert 2016 to ACC since it never came with ACC you need to buy a new engine control module that's compatible with 2017 model year otherwise only LKA is possible.

For LKA only

All Gen2 Volts regardless of trim have LKA commands built-in the power steering module firmware just connect openpilot and do a fingerprint.

For LT ACC You need to flash

1. Engine control module

2. ABS control module

3. Body control module

For Premier ACC You need to flash

1. Engine control module

2. ABS control module

3. Body control module

4. Front Camera

You will receive errors every time the car powers up unless you have ACC radar module installed and wired correctly.  LT models need radar and front camera installed.

Using DPS you can look up current calibrations in Dev. Programming Tool window, under Get Controller Info, enter ECUID then click Read Info. After reading under Software Module Identifier you need to match up the first ID number in the calibration table below. If they match you can update calibrations to use ACC. If they don't match STOP! Please consult with the creator of this guide.

So I found instructions online about how to fingerprint the car. Seems easy enough. Is that really all that would be needed to get LKA on a 2016 LT?  No hardware changes required?  Just a Comma 2 or 3

If you want to add openpilot ACC you can without that ASCM module. Openpilot will take care of the needed signals but you will need the radar installed and the programming changed for it to work. If you want OEM acc you will need that module but that's beyond the scope of this thread.

Yes I have flashed several Volts that didn't come with ACC and it works for openpilot now. You need radar installed.

  • 1 month later...

I have a 2017 Volt LT and I followed the flash instructions by creating a Premier ACC cache file ("GM DPS Archive File From SPS Cache Files"}. I ordered the cache files with utility file as described above for the BCM, ECM, PSCM, EBCM. Everything said it was successful in DPS, but I am getting "x184 NOT SEEN" from OpenPilot.   From what I read it means that Openpilot cannot communicate with the Power Steering. Could the issue be with the firmware for the Body Control Module or Power Steering Module? Maybe does it mean the physical connections on the steering wheel are wrong? I did not touch the steering column so it is factory. Any help would be appreciated or I can pay for your time to resolve this issue. Thanks

Out of curiosity, if I try to run openPilot on the ELR and I retrofit the ACC sensor, would it work? Or is my steering rack not supported? The ELR seems to have a similar electrical architecture to the Gen2 volt

The ELR does not have Lane keep assist so it will not work. It's more of Gen1 Volt than Gen2 Volt.

Do you need to swap out the grille to install the radar module? Is their a bracket that the radar module is connected to that also needs to be ordered?

Yes you would remove the grille. The bracket is already installed for all trim Volts.

You could buy the radar grille but its pretty expensive. I just removed the chrome grille and will probably 3d print something for it.

Below is the link for the general instructions. I would use DPS to flash your firmware instead of SPS2 method.

Okay, I am ordering parts to try this. I saw the list for LT does not include camera and only mention of camera on github was the Service Camera message that is resolved when Comma loads. With comma installed, is the front camera not necessary for LT? Also, wondering why Camera is needed for premier?

The camera is not needed for the LT. The is the cheapest radar connector when you order parts

Make sure you use the DPS method found on this website to flash your firmware correctly.

Also, the instructions are the opposite for USA cars. You will get a BIN file from SPS. You will need to use 7zip to extract them. The extracted files will not be BIN files. You then use these non-BIN files to make your archive file to flash.

I have a 2017 Premier with LKAS but no ACC.  I have purchased and installed the radar and programmed it using a OBD2 programmer and SPS.  I would love to get the OBD2 harness to work with Open Pilot, but always get a hardware malfunction error. When I look at the list of calibrations above, I noticed a few are different than what I have when I check my files.  Is there a repository where I can get the differing files?

The Comma log files should tell you what hardware is not communicating. It should say "Not Seen xxxxx"

You could also try a different fork like OPGM that doesn't use ACC to see if comma works without it. There are plenty of people on Discord that use Comma Pedal instead of ACC with good results too.

I did make all of the archive files if you want to try mine out. You should use DPS to install the new Volt Firmware.

I will take a look at the logs and see what isn't connecting, I hadn't thought about doing that..thanks for the suggestion. I have used the pedal interceptor in the past, not a big fan of it and I get the power reduced error about once a week with the pedal installed. I would like to try the archive files if you have them available.

Yes that's all that's needed believe it or not.

Wow, that’s pretty cool, thanks!  Also, to get longitudinal control, I’d need to swap the engine control module and add a radar?  I assume that’s a very difficult process right? Thanks again!

Working on adding this to use Open Pilot. If I add this, is there any functionality that will not be supported by Open Pilot, or it will work the same as the premier does?
