GM Global A EBCM help

Featured Replies

(Sorry to be long winded but want to detail my problem, thanks for your interest reading through all this)

Hi All, I am an independent (25 years after leaving 17 years at dealers) master technician that takes on a lot of complex issues from other shops and from referrals. Been programming modules via OEM for years, and also dabbled with EEPROM programming for an occasional airbag clear or mileage correction. Still humbled every day, and always learning.

One of my present challenges is a 2011 Cadillac SRX that was bought at auction after being flooded, which I knew would be trouble. This customer is a good friend that took a big chance buying it. In working through the several, likely related issues discovered that the EBCM and Rear Differential Clutch Control Module have two different VINs from vehicle, and each other listed in GDS2 (report attached) Have always bought the new GM replacements, but the EBCM (20842710) is discontinued and there's no new to be found anywhere. I didn't check on the final drive module but know was very expensive if it is available at all.

Called a GM authorized service center worked with in the past. They can "virginize" only IPCs, radios, HIM, and other dashboard electronics on current and older GM Global A vehicles, and could not help with anything else. Also called a couple of ECM repair places but no help there either. That is when I found this site.

Have gotton past one ABS related communiction issue with a new "yaw" sensor, but a new Steering Angle Sensor is not recognized after going through the programming and configuration procedures. Can communicate with SAS directly but the ABS is not buying it. (The Yaw Sensor and SAS are on the same Chassis Expansion bus from EBCM). I believe the communication errors are due to the mismatched modules. I also now realize that DTC B3902 -  "Incorrect Immobilizer Identifier Received" has nothing to do with the immobilzer or Theft Deterrant Module, but is the "environment identifier" stored in BCM, must be the PIN number discussed here(?) Ordered a new Theft Deterrant Module but holding up on it since probably okay and there are Low Speed Bus errors also.

So I'm here in wanting to find out if DPS can be our last resort., or is just not fixable. I suggested he should consider cutting his losses and dump it back to auction, it may not be repairable and who knows the end point where it got wet. Looking through these forums hoping for a tutorial for the processes. Wish I had time learning by experimentation as I have done in many fields over the years. I don't know if this works through the DLC or need to get to EEPROM level. Also confused about the PIN numbers and VINs lining up, and basically how to get started, and what needs to be bought or donated.

Thank you all for your time, Kevin in Maine

If parts match vehicle, best is to load them via SPS and then execute Setup and Configuration. Issue is where my US access is limited due my geo location. But I can try to help even remote to show you

I don't mind pulling the files if they get us the VIN.  If you want to do the other part, it saves me 🙂

@codebuilder I will appreciate this, but I faced issues when build Type4 with DPS creator tool. I’m not bother to waste @Troy time and ask him to ask developer what happen. So preffer to execute Setup

Just to clarify, you have not corrected the VIN in the EBCM?  Did you program the calibrations that would have matched the original vehicle into it?  And yes, the environment identifier is likely the PIN but I wouldn't stress that yet if the vehicle runs and it hasn't locked you out of everything.  I've read your report, I see the VIN's are different...  you definitely want to match that!  Further, I'd try to get the calibrations for the original vehicle and load those in.  That can be done through DPS, it will likely fail right now through SPS for sure.

Thanks for the reply. Spent a few hours today reading through tutorials and anything to help understand. I can see there is a lot of information in the forums, but trying to learn the basics. Spent some time with DPS on this Cadillac, figured out addresses. See that even the aligned modules show different seeds and keys. Have not tried to change VINs, I know SPS won't do it and I do not have the knowledge yet to use DPS with confidence.  I see the VIN and PIN change file services, do I need these, and 4 times for 2 modules? I need to study more but hard to find the time. I don't mind paying for these services if I get get some guidance to do it right. thanks again

You're correct, SPS will not change them.  The EBCM, you would need the VIN and PIN changed.  You could probably get away without the PIN (hold off until later if you wanted) but you don't want too many modules not matching or you'll eventually run into issues.  The other catch is, with the wrong PIN in the EBCM, SPS will try to perform an unlock then stop all programming.  So you'd have to build your own package in DPS but the VIN for sure needs to match.  I would also make sure I did load the proper calibrations back in too.

As for the read differential module, I haven't worked on those but it *might* only be the VIN as not all modules do PIN too.

If parts match vehicle, best is to load them via SPS and then execute Setup and Configuration. Issue is where my US access is limited due my geo location. But I can try to help even remote to show you few tricks. Just we need to match timing as I’m in different time zone.

@codebuilder I will appreciate this, but I faced issues when build Type4 with DPS creator tool. I’m not bother to waste @Troy time and ask him to ask developer what happen. So preffer to execute Setup via SPS and that is only if part numbers match. If not match will be bit more work

Yeeaaahhh,  Type 4 can be a PITA.  The ordering gets messy...  And you can't really auto detect it....

@codebuilder I have no issue with order of files. Issue is with build. There no enough information how to and should be included in tool. I know I can buy additional Tutorial, but atm cannot afford 5$, not to mention 100-150$ for How to build Type4 Tutorial. And will end where still have not full/complete information

I'll just tell you how I do it ;).

Thank for the offers to help. One guy offered to help but have not heard back after I reached out. Feels like some secrecy going on here, understandably.

I basically get the different steps like reading and writing calibrations, and believe I can figure out getting the files from SPS.

One problem is that I don't know the basic sequence of steps, other questions include changing the VIN, if that comes from the SPS file? Also file can be wtitten with unmatched PINs? How to read and change the PINs? Though I have only have 2  modules "misaligned", if the PINs don't line up then wil have a persistent B3902 in all the modules. Again don't mind paying for services, just need to know where to start. Will try to spend some more time experimenting, but don't like working blind.

Thanks again , Kevin

Some are shy just due to the countless hours (and I mean, lots) each person has invested.  What you're trying to do isn't super difficult.  Don't stress the PIN too much right now, I'd worry about the VIN and putting the proper calibrations in.  Do you have the files from SPS for the VIN that should be in the vehicle?  You need to keep track of the old VIN too as you will need it to get the PIN.  If not, can you share the VIN and maybe we can build you a proper package that matches it that you can program with DPS

@codebuilder see him GDS report is proper mess, need 4-5 different files as have few different modules. I made mistake and him await answer from me 😄 😄 😄 but I mistaken my contact information with one digit (I'm soo stupid and wasn't check what I write to someone). I will try to help, but might need to ask you for some US help as you know I'm limited other side of pond

Have come a long way getting a few hints and by experimenting. SPS programming and Setup got the EBCM working even though VIN still incorrect. Even all the B3902s did not return, SAS and all else came into line. Did not do immobolizer relearn.

Learned out how to grab the calibrations (5?) for the EBCM, and found folder in PC.  But did not figure out where to go from there as far as loading into DPS for programming, need to build .ZIP archive?  Will feel better if EBCM VIN is correct.

Also reprogrammed the mismatched Rear Drive Module, and that time the VIN did change, apparently not one of crucial Global A modules.

I looked into the GDS2 infinite access, will post that question in that subject.

Thanks

@Lyubomir Krastanov we got it working :).  I didn't know this, the EBCM isn't too different but the security algorithm was changed at different years.  I figured I'd write this post in case others come across the same thing.  I saw the error code when @Kevin Baker was trying to program it and realized, the wrong seed/key was going.  We got it going though

Thank you for all your help, sharing your extensive knowledge and experience. I pride myself being experienced in many fields automotive and otherwise. This was a whole new level, flying way over my head. It was truly humbling to witness the magic. Another unfixable car is fixed, only with your help. I probably will never have to use this valuable resource again, but good to know it's out there.. thank you all again!
