Doing some research and found this site, I am totally new at this and have a quick question. I am currently working on a 2020 Camaro but have an engine and transmission from a 2019 SS, there is a difference in the Transmission and TCM.  Question is it possible to flash the TCM as a 2019 then change the VIN to the current 2020 or does it even matter? Will the BCM and PCM even look at that VIN? 

Reason for the change is the 2020 uses a 10L80 MI12 and the 2019 uses a 10L80 MF6 transmission, SPS will not allow me to program the MF6 for 2020 so was thinking of programing it as a 2019 and changing the VIN. 

Also will this software make that change possible? I would be using VXDIAG interface.

Hi this is probably not the best answer, I am sure there are better ways to figure out the answer, but when I question whether a certain module will work in different cars, I go to the website car-parts.com which is a website salvage yards use to list items for sale of parts from cars in their lots.  So for example, if you enter 2020 camaro into that website, then enter "computer, not engine", you will get some options.  I selected 3.6 at the bottom because I don't know your exact car and just for demonstration purposes.  When you click search you can see all compatible modules that are available for sale AND on the right you see the cars the modules came from.  From this I deduce that modules from those models/years are compatible.  So based on what I see, 2019 is compatible with 2020.

As for your more specific question, I strongly suspect that SPS will do the vin change or DPS will do it if you get the correct calibration files but I am also new to this and have not attempted such a feat yet.  What I would try is connect the TCM in the car, plug a computer running techline SPS2 to OBD, and try to replace and reprogram.  Good luck hopefully someone else chimes in with a better answer.

Hi Thanks for your reply, yes I use car-part all the time, unfortunately it will not answer this question. The 2020 had a unique transmission as did the 2019 so I am trying to put the 2019 in to the 2020 because I have it and also can't get a used one or even a new one for the 2020. I bought a new virgin module for the 2019 thinking it would just work but it needs to be set up and SPS under the 2020 vin won't do that for the 2019 transmission. So I bought a vin slot for a 2019 and programmed the module this morning and that went fine but did not resolve my problem, which is a shift to park message so the vehicle power will not shut off! Frustrating to say the least.

quick search looks like a shifter related issue, not an tcm issue

Hi, Thanks for the video, saw that, there is even a service bulletin on the issue but that's not my problem, so I did look at that, even measured it with my meter but it functions perfectly.

send both vins to compare tcm hardware on epc,, maybe somebody here can create archieve for 2020,,, the easiest way is vats removal for ecm,, tcm must be unlock first if it is T87A before editing..

 

Thanks for the reply! I will send the vin's when I get back to my shop, Monday. I believe the tcm is a T87. Interestingly enough I went ahead and programmed the module with a 2019 VIN. Before programming there was the 17 yyyyyy's  after programming I looked at the module with the scanner, now it shows programmed date and no vin so I am thinking the BCM - ECM don't care what the vin is. I also have discovered that there is a LIN connection in 2019 that is not present in 2020, I need to track that down as one side comes straight from the TCM and connects to the body harness, I need to chase that and see where the other end goes, but guessing to the BCM. Schematics don't show the path just the connector and lack of it in 2020 ran out of time to look at the BCM connections.

Yes, I see that, it goes to pin 35 of chassis control, not sure what it does but it might be possible it is causing my shift to park issue. Was also thinking since the ecm vin is written in the immobilizer process and I can't complete that with the shift to park error, maybe I should load the 2019 ecm software before I immobilize it, then will have everything in the drive train programmed to a 2019

Update for anyone ever trying to do this!

The LIN connection controls the Transmission cooling fan if you have one! 

I programmed the ECM to the 2019 software, that resolved my shift to park issue!

So, with the correct TCM and ECM software for that engine, the prior immobilization I did, took effect powered down and wrote the 2019 VIN to the ECM module.

Good news is it starts, runs and drives.

Bad news is I have the wrong VIN programmed but small price to pay, to have it running I guess, have to see if that can be fixed.

Thats great news, I will have to read more how to use DPS any version you would recommend for this vin change E92 module. Also, I must have 20 or so E92 modules laying around that can't be programmed because they have VIN's written to them, can I used DPS to remove the VIN's? Thanks

you should change Security Code too. You can do it, when you will prepare that ECMs for installing to the vehicle. If you change VIN, you cannot match it

OK so I have downloaded version 4.46 and have been trying to learn how to change the VIN on the 2019 ECM that I programmed to the 2020 VIN and I don't see a way to do that? I also need to change the VIN on the K43 Steering module, looks like there is a download available to do that. Any suggestions

 

go to "Get Controller Info" insert new VIN in VIN ($90) field, press OK. Then select ZIP container for ECM and press "Programm"

I have tried that several times, I put in the module ID 11 and put in the VIN I want then select OK and then select Set Mec to Zereo ECM and Program when I go back to Get Controller Info and read data it shows the old vin

 

Set_MEC_to_Zero_xxx only set MEC to Zero fo "xxx" module

So I am using the wrong Zip Container? Those are the only options I see?

Thanks for sharing, I did message with Troy and according to him, there is currently not a way in DPS to change the VIN of the ECM. I know there are services out there that can do an off vehicle eprom flash and change it that way but I'm not sure it is necessary, it would just be nice to have matching vins.

 

What ECM we talking about here?  I just bought a device that allows you to clone GM ECUs I have been busy with many other things so I only goofed with it for a few minutes but I did successfully read an ECU and then write to it.  It clones and that's not to say that it allows you to change the VIN of the ECU but you can dump the eeprom and flash to file and then program the eeprom and flash with those files.  So if you can modify the eeprom contents and the ECU doesn't reject the modifications then you could change the ECU VIN if it is one of the compatible ECUs.  The device I am speaking about is called io-prog.  Hope this helps.
