GM Vehicle Modules Documentation

GM HMI 2.5 theft lock removal, unlock

Here you will find information and files for upgrading your HMI v2 to the HMI v2.5 or replacing your HMI module with a used part.
Upgrading from HMI v2.0 to HMI v2.5 will enable you to have Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, better SAT-NAV maps, play videos and faster touch reaction from the your touch screen.

The majority for GM's electronic modules car parts are security locked to a specific car via the car's VIN number.

In order to install a used car parts and have it functioning you first need to program your car's vin number to the module.

When upgrading from the HMI v2.0 to the HMI v2.5 you also need to upgrade the radio module. You can bypass the radio module upgrade by updating the radio module firmware to v2.5 specs, (if you update the radio module firmware you no not need to replace it)

The radio module upgrade firmware can be found below.

You will also need to replace your cars double USB port to the single USB port in order to get the apple CarPlay working.

See below photos.

The items you will need for removing the theft lock from the HMI module:

  1. A copy of GM DPS software, preferably V4.44.
  2. My custom DPS HMI vin change file
  3. A compatible GM diagnostic interface example: VXDIAG Nano, Drew tech mongoose GM2 pro etc, (all diagnostic interface that works with GM's SPS will work with GM's DPS software.

GM DPS V4.44

One file that will remove the theft lock from both the HMI and radio module, DPS VIN Relearn file.

For European cars/cars that uses the SilverBox Radio module.

For USA cars/cars that uses the satellite radio module.

The HMI module location and the USB module you will need for Apple CarPlay.

Hi Codebuilder, saw your message but can't send message. I do have DPS 4.48, so what else I will need a config file and then I buy HMI 2.0/2.5 Module VIN Number Relearn program is that all?

Super thank you Codebuilder!!

Christopher

Might be too new :).  I can send you something that might be close for now if you like?  What you'll need:

- VIN Number Relearn (for the HMI)

- Calibrations to set settings for your car (I might be able to get something close until I can get back into SPS)

Oh yes still theft locked. I even get the Buick screen on my old radio, so a recap, original Camaro radio that looks like it's all good as with that GM GDS2 I was able to bypass the theft lock and was able to set time and look around.

Sorry to hear you can't get into SPS yet... I think the BCM and the Radio have the the correct VIN, just the HMI needs to be updated and from what I understand I just need the Calibrations that provide all of the features as I do have Nav and Sirus XM, + the Illumination setup all factory...

Last also is on the main display has Audio Off and think with the Calibrations file should fix and give me the Camaro splash screen?

Thank you so very much for taking your time helping me!

You don't know what you miss when you don't have it anymore!

Also for everyone I did attach a cpu fan to the bottom of the original HMI unit and made no difference, and if anyone goes into my issues I hope this helps..

So I fully understand, I need to purchase the HMI 2.0/2.5 Module VIN Number Relearn? Or is this for the DPS 4.48? I'm very new to all of this. Maybe I saw here a video on how to do this?

Really appreciate yours and everyones help with this!

No worries!  Run DPS, go into Programming, hit Select Cal and pick the ZIP file I've sent you, pick pins 6 & 14 (should be default) and hit program.  The key needs to be in accessory for the HMI at minimum though (or it has to be awake).  It'll take like 2 minutes at most

Wow, this sounds easy! I was not sure as I was thinking I would need to unzip it first but no? Ok confirm Pin 6 & 14 and hit Program, and the key in the car and the ignition on but not the engine.

I will report back ASAP...

Thank you and this site!

Definitely don't unzip it and don't rename it :).  If you rename it, DPS doesn't like that the .tbl name doesn't match.  If it's theft-locked, you're probably going to have to get Troy's HMI learner.

Nope, you should be good.  You can't hurt these things!  The worst you do is upload like a Cadillac one and you've got the wrong boot logo haha.  Don't upload a 2.0 to a 2.5 though, that breaks it (but can be recovered with a 2.5).

100% in the car as from what I have read it needs the BCM and other modules to communicate?

Thank you for the question.

Yes 100% I have a 2.5 HMI, as I read here about that here... Awesome site!

Not so much, the module just needs to be awake like Lyubomir stated.  I usually do HMI's in-vehicle in accessory so I'm not draining as much.  On the bench it's a bit different.

Not 100% sure not all that in to all of this, I was expecting to have the acc/ignition on to do this and think it should take a minuet or so then close down DPS and unplug the XVdiag and shut off the Acc/ignition and then star the car right?

So cool!

Just put it in either accessory or ignition on, it'll take like maximum 2 minutes (and that's stretching).  You don't have to start the car, just turn the key off after programming, wait 30 seconds, turn it back on.  If it still says theft locked, like I say, you'll need Troy's HMI VIN learn but it will be calibrated to what you had at least.

Ah ok I see. I will give it try Monday night and report back...This is because your files in DPS 4.48 will calibrate the eBay HMI but still may still see the original VIN then get Troy's HMI Vin learn? Correct?

Thanks so very much!

Your settings are ok, 6&14. Global A/B/Other doesn't matter for this.  And don't worry, it's very difficult to break these.

Can you attach the log?  It'll be in C:\DPS\Logs - programlog.txt

You have the key on and it's plugged into the OBD2 port?  It didn't receive anything back from the vehicle.
